Meet the gentleman's sword. Born of ancient China, the jian is considered to be one of the four fundamental weapons, alongside the dao (broadsword or sabre), the gun (staff), and the qiang (spear). The jian is also known as the tai chi sword, where it has earned reputation as a legendary weapon, thanks to its appearance in the hands of numerous wushu acts and Kung Fu films. At Dark Knight Armoury, we attempt to blend the history and tradition of this sword with its modern legend to create a blade as light and as fast as the wind, yet as powerful as a raging river. Supposedly, this sword earned its nickname as the gentleman's sword and the scholar's sword because a frail scholar could carry it all day long, and still not tire of its weight. There is no accounting for history, but the blades we offer are light and quick, as well as easy to wield, and that makes the jian a deadly blade that is capable of decisive, swift, and deadly in skilled hands. We offer a few fully functional variations of this blade which bear some explaining. More traditional tai chi swords and jian are designed for battle and have a blade that is made for cutting and thrusting. Many of our jian, including our battle 'gim' swords and our two handed jians fit into this category. A wushu jian, or a wushu tai chi sword, though, is designed to be ultra-thin and flexible, which lends more drama and flare to the martial arts demonstration.
