The Sgian Dubh is a ceremonial dagger that is traditionally worn as a part of modern Scottish Highland dress along with a kilt. Historically, the Sgian Dubh was considered a secret or a hidden weapon, which is one possible meaning behind its name. Sgian Dubh is Gaelic, translating roughly to 'black knife', which some have theorized as a reference to the classic color of the knife's hilt. Others state that, in a time when a man was expected to surrender his weapons when entering another's home as a guest, the 'black knife' was to remain hidden and on his person. This classic sgian dubh measures approximately 6.625 inches long, possessing a blade length of 3.375 inches. It possesses a simple shape and a tempered blade that features a full tang that's been peened at the top of the handle for added strength. The handle is made from iron wood. When sheathed, the back of the blade is completely flat, in order to ensure that the knife fits against the leg when tucked into a stocking or sock. The wood sheath is included with the dagger. A collector of knives and blades will certainly find this authentic looking Sgian Dubh to be a great acquisition, although those of Scottish descent who still favor the Highland manner of dress will find that this Sgian Dubh is a dagger worth owning too, if only to have it tucked in your stocking and always on-hand.
